Solomon Choi, the visionary founder behind the widely loved New York City-based Sixteen Handles soft-serve ice cream franchise, has died at the age of 44. His passing was announced on Friday, though no cause of death has been disclosed.
Neil Hershman, who acquired the franchise in 2022, expressed deep sorrow over Choi’s unexpected death.
“We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of 16 Handles’ founder and former CEO Solomon Choi,” Hershman said in a heartfelt statement. “He was a visionary who came to New York City in his 20s and founded this iconic frozen dessert brand. 16 Handles is where I got my personal start in franchising and I owe so much to Solomon for the opportunities, education, mentorship, and friendship he provided me throughout the years.”
Choi was known for his optimistic spirit and dedication to the company’s mission to “create moments of happiness”, qualities reflected both personally and professionally, according to Hershman.
The ice cream franchise has become a beloved brand for soft-serve lovers, gaining recognition for its customizable flavors and community-focused approach.
Our thoughts are with Solomon Choi’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
