As it nears its 10-year anniversary, Charlie’s Ice Cream Shop has become more than just a place to grab a cone—it’s a symbol of tradition, entrepreneurship, and community spirit in Hialeah, Florida.
Founded by Charles Sauer in June 2015, Charlie’s has earned its place as a beloved neighborhood landmark. Instagram personality Marc Anthony Salvat, affectionately known as the “King of Hialeah,” says the shop is much more than a dessert stop.
“The story of Charlie’s is inspiring the new age of entrepreneurship,” Salvat said. “It motivates young people who want to open their own brick-and-mortar businesses and shows them they can succeed without falling into the corporate world.”
What sets Charlie’s apart? A commitment to classic, old-school ice cream. Housed in a former Dairy Queen that first opened in 1952, the shop retains its retro vibe, with nostalgic decor and a traditional soft-serve experience that delights generations of customers.
Sauer, who once worked multiple jobs in cleaning and landscaping, found himself unexpectedly offered the opportunity to open an ice cream shop. He turned on the lights, opened the doors—and business took off.
Over the years, Charlie’s Ice Cream Shop has averaged a 20% annual growth rate, with no flashy gimmicks—just friendly service, local ingredients, and flavors that reflect Hialeah’s rich culture. From guava to mamey, Sauer infuses the menu with Hispanic flair, all while partnering with local vendors from Miami and St. Petersburg.
With buy-one-get-one-free specials and rotating flavors of the month, Charlie’s continues to evolve while remaining true to its roots.
Customer service is a cornerstone of the business. Sauer and his team wear shirts proudly reading “I love Hialeah”, and regularly support local fundraisers and community events.
“It’s the little things that make a big difference,” Salvat shared. “The experience was great overall. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.”
As the shop prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Sauer is expanding with a second location in Westchester—proof that small-town charm and smart local strategy can still thrive in today’s ice cream business.
Charlie’s Ice Cream Shop is open daily from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at 510 Hialeah Drive. For updates and sweet snapshots, follow them on Instagram at @charliesicecream.
