UJI, KYOTO — Celebrating a legacy that stretches back to the Edo period, renowned tea specialist Itohkyuemon is delighting matcha lovers once again with a new range of seasonal sweets in honor of hydrangea season. Founded in 1832, Itohkyuemon has become a leader in matcha ice cream and parfait innovations, cementing its place as a must-visit destination for green tea enthusiasts worldwide.
This year marks the 13th anniversary of their famed Hydrangea Parfait, crafted to celebrate Uji’s iconic Mimurotoji Temple, also known as “Hydrangea Temple” for its stunning flower displays during the rainy season. The limited-time parfait (1,390 yen / US$9.69) features matcha kinton—a sweet bean confection—hydrangea-colored crushed jelly, delicate leaf-shaped matcha cookies, and fresh blueberries, all inspired by the glistening blooms.
The “Uji Matcha × Hydrangea Festival 2025” also includes a Hydrangea-flavored addition to the popular Matcha Parfait Ice Cream Bar series (740 yen), alongside a Hydrangea Mini Parfait upgrade option, Hydrangea Panna Cotta (590 yen), and Hydrangea Kinton (two for 990 yen).
These exquisite treats are available at multiple locations, including the Uji Main Store, JR Uji Ekimae Store, and select Kyoto branches such as Gion Shijo, Kiyomizuzaka, and Byodoin. The parfaits and ice cream bars debuted on May 23, with kinton available from May 26 and panna cotta arriving June 1. All items are offered in limited quantities, so visitors are encouraged to indulge early.
Itohkyuemon’s innovative blend of traditional Uji matcha with creative seasonal flavors underscores the growing popularity of latest ice cream trends that honor cultural heritage while offering fresh, inventive tastes to modern consumers.
