Amul, India’s largest dairy cooperative, is experiencing robust growth in its ice cream business this season, propelled by an unusually early onset of summer. According to Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, the company has recorded a year-on-year growth of 35–40% in ice cream sales since February.
“It has been a fantastic season,” Mehta said. “Since February, March, and April—and continuing over the next few months—we are seeing very strong growth, well above 35–40% year-on-year and month-on-month.”
The early arrival of warmer weather has boosted consumption, contributing to strong double-digit growth across India’s ice cream sector. While traditional favourites like vanilla and chocolate remain dominant, changing consumer preferences are reshaping the market. Health-conscious buyers are increasingly opting for low-fat, high-protein, and sugar-free alternatives. Plant-based and dairy-free options are also gaining traction among lactose-intolerant and vegan consumers.
Demand for functional ingredients, including dry fruits, superfoods, and probiotics, is expanding beyond metropolitan cities and into tier-2 and tier-3 markets, signaling a broader shift in consumer expectations.
Amul, which reported a turnover of approximately ₹66,000 crore in the last financial year, expects to maintain its growth trajectory. The company is targeting a turnover of ₹75,000 to ₹80,000 crore this year, a projection driven by aggressive product innovation, wider distribution, and reinforced marketing efforts.
To capitalize on the growing demand, Amul has introduced 20 to 25 new ice cream variants and is expanding into protein-based product lines, aiming to capture a larger share of the fast-evolving consumer market.
With its current momentum, Amul has further strengthened its position as India’s largest fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, outpacing its nearest multinational competitor by roughly 10%.
