EL CENTRO, Calif. — After more than ten years on hold, a beloved community event is making its return to downtown El Centro. The City of El Centro has announced the revival of its Ice Cream Social and Rain on Main, scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Downtown Town Square.
The event was originally suspended due to persistent drought conditions in the region. But with the state officially declaring an end to the drought, city leaders are eager to bring back the family-friendly celebration.
“This is something our community remembers fondly,” said Adriana Nava, Community Services Director for the City of El Centro. “We stopped hosting it because of water restrictions, but now that the drought has been declared over, we can bring back this tradition and all the joy it brings.”
This year’s festivities will include live music, food vendors, a dedicated kids’ zone, and a beer garden. A variety of local ice cream vendors will also be on hand to distribute free scoops to attendees.
As a highlight of the evening, the El Centro Fire Department will recreate the iconic “Rain on Main” by showering the street with water hoses — a nostalgic feature that many long-time residents will remember.
Mayor Sonia Carter, who championed the event’s return, is expected to attend and engage with residents, offering an opportunity for community members to share their concerns and ideas directly with city leadership.
The return of the Ice Cream Social marks a renewed focus on community engagement and family-oriented programming in El Centro.
