BUDAPEST — With summer in full swing, Hungarians are feeling the heat — not just from the rising temperatures, but also at the counter. A new analysis from the Oeconomus Center reveals that two beloved summer staples, ice cream and lángos, are set to cost noticeably more this season.
Scoops Now Come with a Heftier Price Tag
Ice cream lovers can expect to pay 10 to 15 percent more per scoop compared to last summer, with the average scoop now priced at around 600 forints (approximately €1.49). The spike is attributed largely to rising international dairy and cocoa prices, two key ingredients in many frozen treats.
Despite the increase, demand for ice cream remains strong. Hungarians are famously loyal to this summertime indulgence, with the season stretching from spring to late fall. Traditional flavors like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and lemon continue to dominate, though newer options such as pistachio, mango, Dubai chocolate, and dragon fruit are gaining traction.
Interestingly, regional price differences persist, but overall, Hungary still boasts more affordable ice cream compared to many Western European countries.
Fried Favorite Lángos Gets a 20% Bump
Another summer classic, lángos—the beloved deep-fried dough typically topped with sour cream and cheese—is also seeing a steep price hike. Prices are expected to rise by around 20 percent, bringing the cost of a basic lángos to 1,200–1,300 forints (roughly €2.97–€3.22).
This increase stems from soaring ingredient and energy costs, particularly for flour and cooking oil. Although some of the components—like milk, oil, flour, sour cream, and Trappist cheese—are part of Hungary’s price freeze program, businesses are still facing higher operating expenses across the board.
Not Just a Treat—A Cultural Tradition
Both lángos and ice cream are integral parts of Hungary’s culinary identity and summer lifestyle. Whether eaten by Lake Balaton or in Budapest’s bustling food markets, these treats offer more than refreshment—they’re a taste of tradition.
And while rising costs may cause a bit of sticker shock, many Hungarians seem willing to pay the premium. As one local vendor put it: “Summer just wouldn’t be summer without a lángos and a scoop of chocolate ice cream.”
