FORT DRUM, N.Y. — Soldiers and families at Fort Drum have a new reason to smile this summer with the grand opening of Mountain Peak Ice Cream, the latest addition to the post’s community amenities. The shop officially opened its doors on June 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a sweet milestone for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR).
Located behind The Peak community venue, the shop is already winning hearts with its array of hard and soft-serve ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, and weekly specials. Small cones are offered for children, and even furry companions can enjoy doggie treats.
“This is the second business we’ve opened in under a year, and it’s been a phenomenal effort,” said Sharon Addison, FMWR director. “We’re proud to open Mountain Peak Ice Cream and look forward to its continued success.”
Col. Matthew Myer, Fort Drum’s garrison commander, praised the FMWR team’s vision and community focus. “This can only happen because of a lot of hard work. They’ve really tapped into what the community wants — and clearly, people in the North Country love their ice cream.”
The opening follows a similar success story from last fall with Sip of Glory Coffeehouse, also run by FMWR. Both businesses enhance The Peak’s growing appeal as a social and recreational hub for Fort Drum residents.
The shop’s early buzz during its soft launch, coupled with strong community support, underscores the growing demand for locally accessible, family-friendly destinations. It also mirrors national trends where ice cream franchise opportunities thrive by blending quality offerings with a sense of place and community engagement — especially in military and small-town settings.
With Mountain Peak Ice Cream now in full swing, Fort Drum families can enjoy a well-deserved scoop of summer right at their doorstep.
