HYATTSVILLE, MD — A chic new ice cream destination is heading to Hyattsville this winter. Snow Crane, a Japanese-inspired ice cream and tea shop, will open its doors at the Canvas Apartments at 3554 Baltimore Ave., bringing minimalist sundaes, artisanal teas, and a strong dose of culinary innovation to the city’s food scene.
The concept comes from acclaimed chef Takeshi Nishikawa, former culinary director of the renowned Rose’s Restaurant Group—known for award-winning spots like Rose’s Luxury and Pineapple and Pearls. Now a Hyattsville resident, Nishikawa says launching Snow Crane locally felt like a natural fit.
“I decided to open an ice cream shop as a family person since the city could benefit from more high quality ice cream options,” said Nishikawa. “There is a lot going on. This city is going to boom without a doubt.”
Among the standout offerings is a signature kinako ice cream, crafted with roasted soybean flour, dusted with kinako powder, and topped with a rich Okinawan black sugar syrup—highlighting Snow Crane’s focus on refined flavors and elegant simplicity.
Before securing its permanent location at Canvas, Snow Crane held a series of popular Route 1 pop-ups that caught the attention of D.C. food media and local foodies alike. The new shop is expected to begin construction between December and February.
Nishikawa, who moved to Hyattsville in 2021, praised the city’s trails, affordability, proximity to Washington D.C., and thriving local businesses, including 2Fifty BBQ, Manifest Bread, and Vigilante Coffee, whose beans he says he wanted to wake up smelling.
“There’s a strong creative energy here,” he added. “At Snow Crane, we plan to work closely with local artists from Pyramid Atlantic, Material Things, and others to reflect that spirit.”
As Hyattsville continues to blossom with new culinary and cultural ventures, Snow Crane promises to be a refined and family-friendly addition to the neighborhood—offering both a sweet treat and a sense of community.
