Scoops, the La Jolla-based ice cream franchise, has opened its newest location at 4944 Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, quickly drawing rave reviews and long lines from both locals and tourists.
“It’s going amazingly well—we’ve been busy every day,” said manager Yissel Landin. “I just love the OB crowd; they’re so down-to-earth and very welcoming to us.”
Scoops’ roots as a “mom and pop” business began seven years ago, evolving from a laundromat to a local ice cream shop before expanding into a franchise. The Ocean Beach shop marks the third location in the growing chain.
“Our ice cream comes from Van Leeuwen, a Brooklyn, New York-based company,” Landin explained. “They make small batches using all-natural flavors and never use food coloring. That’s why our ice cream tastes homemade.”
Though the name Van Leeuwen might be unfamiliar to some, the quality speaks for itself. The creamy, flavorful ice cream is winning over customers, including families like Ocean Beach residents Alyssia Neil and her husband Phil, who enjoyed their first visit alongside their three children.
Van Leeuwen’s vegan offerings also stand out, made with coconut cream combined with cashew or oat milk depending on the flavor, according to Landin.
Scoops offers a full range of classic ice cream treats, including shakes, malts, root beer floats, coffee, and crepes. For those seeking a caffeine kick, the shop features affogatos—espresso shots poured over any flavor of ice cream for a rich dessert experience.
Among the newest flavors are white chocolate raspberry brownie and blue jasmine passion fruit, Landin’s personal favorite.
