KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a 2024 burglary at a popular River Market ice cream shop, underscoring the city’s efforts to protect local small businesses.
Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on Tuesday, May 20, that John Heckman pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and property damage related to the break-in at Betty Rae’s, located at 412 Delaware Street. Heckman’s sentencing reflects the community’s growing concern over repeat offenses impacting small business owners.
“Our office remains committed to protecting our small businesses, which contribute so much to our community,” Johnson said. “Too many small business owners are facing financial hardships and inconveniences as a result of repeat burglaries. We will continue to pursue appropriate consequences for those who repeatedly victimize businesses in Jackson County.”
According to Kansas City Police Department reports, law enforcement responded to the scene on October 13, 2024, following reports of a burglary. Officers discovered the shop’s glass door shattered and a safe containing $2,000 missing. Surveillance footage captured Heckman, an older male, throwing a rock through the window before entering the premises and removing the safe.
The break-in caused nearly $3,700 in damages to the business, including replacement of the door and safe. Heckman’s criminal history includes multiple prior convictions for burglary and theft across the metropolitan area.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Heckman remains in custody in Kansas City.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by local ice cream franchises and small business owners across the region, emphasizing the need for increased security and community support to safeguard these beloved establishments.
