McDonald’s loyal customers in the United States are expressing frustration after learning that the chain’s new Birthday Cake McFlurry, launched to celebrate the dessert’s 30th anniversary, will not be available on U.S. menus anytime soon.
Instead, the special McFlurry is being offered exclusively in Canada, a move that has sparked backlash from American fans on social media. “I knew the second I saw this it wasn’t in America,” one Instagram user commented on a post by food blogger Snackolator. Another wrote, “@mcdonalds this is ridiculous. You weren’t born in Canada, the USA should get this.”
The Birthday Cake McFlurry was first invented by Canadian franchisee Ron McLellan in 1995 and features vanilla soft serve blended with cake-flavored cookie dough pieces and cake-flavored syrup. This limited-time flavor is part of a lineup of new items recently added to Canadian McDonald’s menus.
Snackolator noted Canada’s recent exclusive menu additions, including an Apple Shake inspired by Minecraft and a Creme Egg McFlurry. “Canada lately has gotten an Apple shake for Minecraft and Cadbury Egg McFlurry just in the last month… just throwing that out there,” the blogger wrote. Fans responded with playful jabs about perceived favoritism, with one Instagram user commenting, “I like the subtle shade to McDonald’s for showing obvious favoritism to other countries lol.”
Currently, U.S. McDonald’s locations offer only the original Oreo and M&M’s McFlurry flavors, while Canada also features Skor and Smarties McFlurries. There has been no official word on whether the Birthday Cake McFlurry will ever launch in the U.S.
Many U.S. fans have joked that they might need to “travel to Canada” to try the coveted treat.
This news comes as McDonald’s works to recover from a 3.6 percent drop in sales during the first quarter of 2025. The chain has been expanding popular deals, such as the $5 Meal Deal, and recently launched the nationwide rollout of its McCrispy Strips.
Alongside the McFlurry buzz, anticipation continues for the return of the McCrispy Snack Wrap, rumored to have launched on April 29. However, the item has yet to appear on U.S. menus. Canadian customers, meanwhile, can enjoy McWraps and regular Snack Wraps at their local McDonald’s locations.
