Sherman’s Dairy Bar, a beloved landmark near Lake Michigan, has reopened under new ownership, much to the delight of fans who have been visiting for decades. Now known as Sherman’s of South Haven, the iconic ice cream stand is once again serving up generous portions of its famous ice cream.
The new owner, Mike Schimanski, who also owns Oink’s Dutch Treat in New Buffalo, has taken the reins of the operation at 1601 Phoenix St. in South Haven, Michigan. Schimanski, who acknowledges the significance of the Sherman’s brand, aims to keep the legacy alive by serving up the same rich ice cream flavors that fans know and love. Hudsonville Ice Cream continues to produce the ice cream under the Sherman’s brand.
Sherman’s of South Haven offers around 30 flavors of ice cream, and if you’re unsure which one to pick, they even have a flight option. The famous cow statues remain perched on the roof of the building, now part of the shop’s new logo, keeping the nostalgic charm alive.
Several staff members from the original Sherman’s Dairy Bar are back, contributing to the shop’s familiar, welcoming atmosphere. Schimanski is focused on maintaining the high standards that have kept customers coming back for years, including generous portion sizes. According to him, “Our single is a double for everybody else”, so you won’t leave hungry.
Sherman’s of South Haven is located just 2 miles from Lake Michigan, making it a convenient and popular stop for locals and visitors alike. As Schimanski looks forward to the future, he’s hopeful that the shop will continue to serve the community for another 66 years.
