As July ushers in National Ice Cream Month, declared by Ronald Reagan in 1984 to celebrate America’s favorite frozen treat, one state stands out for its love of ice cream: Wisconsin. According to data from food delivery app Grubhub, Wisconsin topped the list for ice cream orders in 2019, followed by Massachusetts, Colorado, New York, and New Mexico.
Known as “America’s Dairyland,” Wisconsin’s position as the leading ice cream consumer aligns with its status as a dairy powerhouse. Despite challenges from tariffs and fluctuating dairy prices, the state boasts around 7,700 dairy farms—the highest in the nation—and a herd of approximately 1.28 million cows, sustaining its rich tradition in dairy production.
Flavor preferences vary by region, with coffee, caramel, and chocolate chip dominating in the Midwest. Mint chip leads in the Northeast and Western U.S., while birthday cake and Oreo flavors are most popular in the South. These trends highlight diverse tastes as consumers nationwide celebrate the latest ice cream flavors during this iconic month.
