AUSTIN, Texas — Beloved local institution Amy’s Ice Creams is marking a milestone that few independent dessert shops ever reach: 40 years of scooping, stunting, and staying weird. To celebrate, Amy’s is throwing a free, family- and dog-friendly party on June 8, and all of Austin is invited.
The festivities will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bouldin Acres, a vibrant South Austin hotspot known for its laid-back vibe. The event will feature live music, food and coffee from Bouldin Acres, and the signature ice cream stunts that have made Amy’s a local legend. Guests can also look forward to limited-edition flavors, adding a unique twist to the celebration.
True to its reputation for flair and fun, Amy’s is also planning a world record attempt — for the most people throwing and catching ice cream. Whether or not the record is officially broken, it promises to be a spectacle unlike anything else in town.
“For years, our scoopers have turned a simple scoop into something magical,” said Amy’s giving director Jess Banks. “Our scoopers are performers, athletes, and artists — and we’re letting that fly again (literally) for our 40th.”
Amy’s Ice Creams has long been an anchor of Austin’s ice cream scene, known for its quirky culture, creative flavors, and highly skilled scoopers who don’t just serve ice cream — they perform with it. Whether flipping scoops midair or slamming them onto a cold stone to mix in toppings, Amy’s team has always gone the extra mile to entertain and delight.
Founded in 1984, Amy’s Ice Creams has grown beyond just one location to become a name recognized across Texas. As more entrepreneurs explore ice cream franchise opportunities, Amy’s success stands as a case study in how to build a brand that’s both scalable and deeply rooted in community culture.
In a city that continues to evolve, Amy’s has remained steadfast in its mission to serve joy one scoop at a time. And after 40 years, it’s clear that Austin still has an appetite for weird — and wonderful — ice cream.
