Ahmedabad, May 15 — A Havmor ice cream parlour was sealed and the company’s manufacturing unit fined ₹50,000 after a customer reported finding what appeared to be a lizard’s tail in her ice cream cone, officials confirmed Wednesday.
The incident came to light when a woman from Maninagar raised an alarm after allegedly discovering a lizard’s tail in a “Happy Cone” ice cream she had purchased from a parlour located at Mahalakshmi Corner, Dev Kutir Avenue. The woman was reportedly admitted to a hospital after feeling unwell. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Food Department responded promptly, sealing the parlour and initiating an investigation.
Dr. Bhavin Joshi, Additional Health Officer at AMC, said, “The ice cream parlour was not licensed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Following the complaint, we sealed the establishment and imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the manufacturing unit of Havmor Ice Cream Pvt. Ltd., located in GIDC Naroda.”
Officials confirmed that the entire production batch of the implicated product has been ordered for recall. A sample from the batch has been collected and sent for laboratory testing to determine how the contamination may have occurred.
Havmor, in an official statement, acknowledged the incident and stated that it is cooperating fully with the investigation. “The incident has been brought to our attention and we are in touch with the affected consumer. We are committed to conducting a thorough inquiry. At Havmor, we prioritize product quality and safety and adhere to the highest global standards,” a company spokesperson said.
AMC authorities said that broader inspections are planned across units producing ice cream, cold drinks, dairy items, sweets, ghee, edible oils, dry fruits, and snacks. The initiative is part of an intensified crackdown to ensure food safety across Ahmedabad.
