Wells Enterprises, also known as Wells Dairy, has initiated a voluntary recall of 22 varieties of ice cream and frozen yogurt distributed across more than 100 facilities nationwide due to the potential presence of plastic fragments in the products. The recall was announced on April 25, 2025.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as Class II, indicating that while the risk of serious health consequences is low, consumption could result in temporary or medically reversible effects, such as dental injury or choking.
The affected products, sold primarily in 3-gallon containers, have been distributed to restaurants, cafeterias, and other food service operations throughout the United States. The recall covers multiple flavors and brands, including private-label and partner-distributed items. The largest impacted batch includes 5,280 tubs of Vanilla Frozen Yogurt.
All recalled items bear “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March to October 2026. The full list of affected products includes popular flavors such as Rocky Road, Mocha Almond Fudge, Peanut Butter ‘N Fudge, Cotton Candy, and various vanilla formulations under different brand names.
The contamination risk stems from hard plastic fragments, which pose physical hazards including choking, cuts, or dental damage if ingested.
Byron D. Chaves, professor of Food Science and Technology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, explained that contamination may occur during manufacturing steps involving blending or the addition of mix-ins. “Plastic fragments may come from ingredients like toppings, utensils, or occasionally from packaging materials,” he said. “Such incidents point to lapses in supplier controls or manufacturing processes.”
Chaves added that the recall’s Class II status suggests that either the products have not reached retail shelves or that the plastic pieces are large enough for consumers to detect and avoid.
Consumers and distributors are strongly advised to check product batch codes carefully and to immediately remove any affected inventory from circulation.
Wells Enterprises has not provided additional comments beyond the recall notice.
