Breyers Ice Cream has voluntarily recalled over 6,600 cases of its Chocolate Truffle flavor after it was discovered that some tubs contained Rocky Road ice cream, a product containing almonds—a life-threatening allergen for some consumers.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed on June 10 that 6,668 cases of Breyers Chocolate Truffle 1.5-quart tubs were recalled by Unilever Manufacturing due to “undeclared allergens and mislabeled product.” Specifically, Rocky Road ice cream was packaged inside tubs labeled as Chocolate Truffle, with lids indicating the presence of almonds. However, the tubs only stated “may contain tree nuts,” causing confusion and posing serious risks for individuals with almond allergies.
This recall was classified by the FDA as a Class II recall, indicating that exposure to the mislabeled product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, although serious consequences are unlikely.
A Breyers spokesperson said, “People with an almond allergy should not consume the product due to risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. The safety and quality of our products is our top priority.” Consumers seeking more information can visit www.breyers.com or call 1-800-931-2826.
The recall affects products distributed to various distribution centers and retail locations across the United States, though the exact regions impacted have not been specified.
This recent recall follows a similar incident involving Wells Dairy, which voluntarily recalled nearly 18,000 containers of ice cream and frozen yogurt due to contamination with hard plastic fragments.
