Sushma Koritala, a technology manager and immigrant to the United States, has turned her passion for community connection into a new business venture by opening a Paris Baguette franchise in Leander, Texas. After more than a decade in corporate leadership at General Motors, Koritala found new purpose in fostering neighborhood togetherness following the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After 2020, everything shifted,” Koritala explained. “We were so alone, and I started thinking more deeply about community. Once people said COVID was over, I felt the need to reconnect. I asked myself, ‘Where can I hang out with friends again?’ That’s when Paris Baguette came into the picture.”
Koritala was drawn not only to Paris Baguette’s high-quality bakery products but also to its focus on creating community-centered experiences. Opening the café in the growing Austin suburb is her way of offering locals a welcoming place to gather — a modern hub to rebuild social bonds.
Her corporate career helped prepare her for franchising, offering skills in innovation and leadership. Yet, Koritala said the decision to join the franchise world also required stepping outside her comfort zone. “I thought franchising was only for seasoned entrepreneurs,” she said. “But you don’t need to have all the answers up front. With the right brand and support, you can learn and grow.”
Koritala selected Paris Baguette after comparing several franchise options, including ice cream and other food concepts. The bakery’s commitment to quality and community resonated with her. “It’s not just about pastries; it’s about the experiences we create for guests.”
As she soft-launched her first store on April 28, Koritala revealed plans to expand as a multi-unit operator, aiming to bring Paris Baguette’s community-focused bakery model to more neighborhoods. “I want to give back, create jobs, and inspire others in my community to dream big,” she said.
For aspiring franchisees, Koritala offers this advice: “Don’t wait for the perfect time. Do your homework, find a brand you believe in, and be ready to work hard. Franchising gives you a strong foundation, but dedication makes it succeed.”
