PICKERINGTON, OH — Undeterred by chilly spring temperatures, crowds gathered in downtown Pickerington Thursday evening to celebrate the grand opening of Johnson’s Real Ice Cream’s ninth Central Ohio location.
The family-run business, which began in Bexley in 1950, transformed a former Sunoco gas station into a modern scoop shop complete with a rooftop patio — a unique feature that sets this outpost apart. The event, marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, drew hundreds eager to enjoy free ice cream as the doors officially opened at 6 p.m.
Pickerington Mayor Lee Gray hailed the shop as a symbol of the city’s revitalization. “I knew people were excited — our Facebook post about the opening got more engagement than anything we’ve ever posted,” said Gray. “Maybe it’s the ice cream, or maybe it’s the energy building in downtown Pickerington. Our new theme is ‘Elevate Pickerington,’ and this is part of that.”
Gray also spotlighted the shop’s standout rooftop balcony. “I’m not sure if this is the only ice cream place in Ohio with a balcony, but it’s certainly one of a kind. You can enjoy your scoop while overlooking the city — it’s a great place for gatherings.”
The new Johnson’s location adds to the growing number of latest ice cream franchise openings across the region, highlighting the brand’s continued appeal and its commitment to creating inviting community spaces. As ice cream franchise opportunities expand, Johnson’s remains a local favorite with a strong sense of place — and a scoop of nostalgia.
