Glover’s Ice Cream Marks 100 Sweet Years in Indiana

by Alice

FRANKFORT, Ind. – One of Indiana’s most cherished traditions is celebrating a century of scoops. Glover’s Ice Cream, widely believed to be the last independent ice cream company in the state, is proudly marking its 100th anniversary — a milestone that reflects both its enduring legacy and a heartfelt community revival.

Founded in 1925 by Foster Glover, the Frankfort-based company operated for generations under the Glover family. But five years ago, production came to a halt after equipment breakdowns and staffing shortages, following the retirement of Stephen Glover, Foster’s grandson.

Rather than let the legacy melt away, five local investors stepped in, purchasing the company and bringing Stephen back on board to help rebuild operations and pass on his knowledge. “They were very interested in getting the name and product going again,” Stephen said. “The only deal was I had to come back and make sure everything was working right, which I was happy to do.”

Using many of the same time-honored recipes and traditional methods, Glover’s now produces about 600 gallons of ice cream every other week, with the owners and their families working hands-on in the factory on West Clinton Street. Popular flavors and quality ingredients remain at the heart of the brand’s enduring appeal.

“Every cup that gets filled is with love — not just love for the product, but for the community and the legacy,” said co-owner Tony Del Real.

Glover’s Ice Cream is available at the Frankfort factory weekdays from noon to 5 p.m., as well as in grocery stores, concession stands, and eateries across north central Indiana. Plans for expanded distribution are in the works, offering hope for broader reach without compromising its small-town charm.

As the brand enters its second century, Glover’s stands as a rare example of resilience in a market dominated by large chains. Its revival also speaks to the potential in ice cream franchise opportunities and the growing interest in supporting local and authentic ice cream brands.

“What would my grandfather think?” Stephen reflected. “To think that it’s still going after 100 years — I’m really happy for them, and for our family too.”
