BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Despite ongoing struggles in the Brighton retail market to keep storefronts occupied, the ice cream tradition at 360 Washington Street has remained strong for 15 years.
Over the past five years alone, three different ice cream shops have operated from this exact location, demonstrating a steady demand for frozen treats in the neighborhood.
The current occupant, Sweet Spoon, recently took over from Scoop N Scootery, which had been serving customers since 2020. Prior to that, Abbott’s held the spot for a decade.
Sweet Spoon offers an expanded menu that includes a variety of ice cream flavors, frozen yogurt, non-dairy options, milkshakes, croissants, and waffle bubbles. One staff member noted that the spring weather hasn’t yet been ideal for ice cream sales, with Boston experiencing a rainy and cool season.
To differentiate itself, Sweet Spoon plans to introduce homemade ice cream, aiming to carve out a unique identity compared to its predecessor.
The retail sector in Boston and Brighton continues to face hurdles such as rising commercial rents, increasing food costs, and growing competition from online businesses. Still, there is optimism that ice cream, a perennial favorite, will endure at this location—and that Sweet Spoon will thrive.
