HOUSTON, Texas — When the COVID-19 pandemic forced much of the world to slow down, Camille Haynes discovered a surprising new passion: making ice cream. With no prior plans to become an entrepreneur, she began experimenting with homemade recipes, inviting friends and family to sample her creations.
“I had friends and family come over to the house and they would provide feedback,” Camille recalled.
Her husband, Julian, credits that early taste testing for the quality Cosmic Ice Cream is now known for. “That’s why the ice cream is so good today,” he added.
Out of this humble beginning, the couple launched Cosmic Ice Cream Co., a local brand that’s now turning heads with its handcrafted, small-batch offerings. Each month, the shop rotates its selection of flavors, blending classic favorites with bold, inventive choices — all made from scratch.
“There’s no bad ice cream here, it’s all good,” one customer told Localish.
Before founding Cosmic, Camille spent eight years working as a registered dietitian. The shift from advising clients to limit sugar to scooping decadent treats might seem like a leap — but Camille sees no contradiction.
“Everything is okay in moderation,” she said.
