The Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library is set to launch its annual TD Summer Reading Club on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., kicking off a season packed with engaging activities, reading challenges, and even free ice cream.
Youth participants are invited to the library to set their personal summer reading goals, play interactive games, and contribute to a collaborative library mural. The kickoff event marks the beginning of a vibrant summer lineup aimed at encouraging literacy through fun and creativity.
Weekly Programs for All Ages
Wacky Wednesdays (2:00–3:00 p.m.): Running for eight weeks through July and August, these sessions feature themed experiences, including partnerships with the Marine and Rail Museum and international games.
Textile Tuesdays (2:00–3:00 p.m.): A new hands-on craft program for Grades 4–8, held on July 15, July 29, and August 12. Participants will explore fibre arts and develop textile skills.
Story Tent (Tuesdays, 10:30–11:30 a.m.): Held at Queen’s Park across from the Library, this family-friendly storytime runs from July 8 to August 12, designed for the youngest library members and their caregivers.
Babytime (Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.): Stories, songs, and activities for babies and toddlers from July 3 to August 14.
Scoops for Stories: A Sweet Reading Reward
A standout addition this year is the Scoops for Stories Reading Challenge, where young readers can earn a free scoop of ice cream from Sundays Ice Cream Parlour. The promotion runs during Ice Cream Weeks (July 14–19 and August 11–16), with one coupon redeemable per child per week for reporting their reading progress.
This initiative not only incentivizes reading but highlights the growing synergy between community programs and ice cream franchise opportunities that engage local youth and families.
Special Events and Tech-Focused Fun
The Library also welcomes Speaking of Wildlife for a Nature Friends presentation, where children can meet Ontario’s native animals up close and learn about their habitats. Other highlights include:
LEGO Club
Tech it Out Thursdays
3D Printing 101
Whether it’s storytelling in the park or earning a sweet scoop of frozen yogurt, this summer’s library programming offers something for every young reader to enjoy.
