The familiar jingle of an ice cream truck is making a comeback in Putnam County, thanks to the Dixon family from Fraziers Bottom. Inspired by classic ice cream trucks, their new venture, Sugar On Wheels, offers a variety of ice cream, candy, and soda treats, bringing joy and nostalgia back to local neighborhoods.
Mom Kelli Dixon shared that although the idea had been in her mind for some time, the transformation into a fully operational truck happened quickly. “We knocked on someone’s door and asked if they wanted to sell their bus, and they said yes,” she said. “And here we are.”
Operating out of their driveway, the Dixons balance truck maintenance, stocking, and design with their busy family life. Kelli credits her childhood memories as the inspiration behind the venture. “When I was little, I always wanted to go to my grandpa’s house in Hurricane because he had an ice cream truck drive by,” she recalled. “When we moved to a subdivision, there was an ice cream truck here. My girls loved it.”
The decline in ice cream trucks in recent years motivated the family to act, and the community response has been overwhelmingly positive. After launching the business on Facebook, Sugar On Wheels received a flood of supportive comments and shared memories from locals recalling the joy of chasing down an ice cream truck as kids.
“The memories people shared just blew my mind,” Kelli said. “Kids outside playing, hearing the truck, and dropping everything to run after it.”
For the Dixons, the mission goes beyond selling ice cream. “What I’m looking forward to most is seeing people smile and the joy that an ice cream treat brings,” Dixon said.
Sugar On Wheels kicked off its inaugural season on June 11 and aims to expand its neighborhood routes and event bookings soon. The family credits teamwork for turning their dream into reality, with Kelli highlighting the importance of following your passions. “I encourage everyone — if you have a dream, follow it and do what you love,” she said.
