San Antonio residents will soon get their first taste of Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, the popular East Coast ice cream chain known for its creative flavors and made-on-site freshness. Construction is set to be completed by the end of August at 13762 Potranco Rd. #110, marking the franchise’s debut in the Alamo City and Central Texas region.
While Bruster’s has several outlets in Dallas and Houston suburbs, its presence has largely been concentrated east of the Mississippi River. The new San Antonio store represents the brand’s initial expansion into Central Texas.
Bruster’s is celebrated for its inventive ice cream flavors, often featuring mix-ins like chocolate chunks, nuts, and swirls. Beyond classics such as chocolate and orange sherbet, customers can expect playful offerings like Jamaica Me Crazy — a coconut base blended with almonds and fudge — and Cotton Candy Explosion, packed with popping rock candy. The menu varies by location and season, with new flavors introduced regularly.
All Bruster’s shops prepare their ice cream on-site using a special milk-based mix designed to prevent ice crystals and maintain creamy texture.
Founded by Bruce Reed, Bruster’s traces its roots back to his childhood work at his parents’ diner, Jerry’s Curb Service. In 1989, Reed opened a Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt franchise next door, but rebranded to Bruster’s two years later. Since then, the brand has expanded throughout the eastern U.S. and established international locations in Guyana and South Korea.
Many Bruster’s locations operate alongside Nathan’s Famous hot dog outlets, but there is no current indication that the San Antonio store will offer hot dogs.
According to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, renovations at the Shops of Arcadia Ridge location — previously home to Southern Freeze Daiquiri — will begin in mid-July and are expected to be completed by late August, just in time for the late summer heat.
