Captain Bonney’s Creamery Named Best Ice Cream Spot in the New Bedford Area for Second Consecutive Year

by Alice

ROCHESTER, Mass. — For the second year in a row, Captain Bonney’s Creamery has been voted the top ice cream destination in the South Coast Today readers’ poll, a recognition that owner Amber Romero calls both humbling and affirming.

“It feels so good. We are so blessed to have the kind of customer base that we do, because they’re so supportive,” Romero said. “Winning it the first time was amazing. Winning it the second time feels just as amazing because I know that me and my employees put out a lot of hard work. This just shows that what we’re doing is right.”

A Sweet Legacy Anchored in Local History

Founded in 2011, Captain Bonney’s Creamery pays homage to its namesake, Captain Nathaniel Bonney—a 19th-century whaling captain who once owned the land and is buried in Rochester’s cemetery. The creamery’s nautical theme echoes its historical roots and adds to the charm that continues to draw families and ice cream lovers alike.

Located at 258 New Bedford Road, the creamery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., including holidays. With scenic views and ample seating, it’s become a staple summer stop in the region.

Romero’s connection to Captain Bonney’s began in its first season, when she joined as a summer employee. After eight years on staff, she took over ownership in 2020—just as the COVID-19 pandemic posed major challenges to small businesses.

“As soon as I opened, we had to follow so many rules,” she said. “But with the help of the town’s health department, we were able to stay open because we were takeout. We just tried to go hard with the town.”

Building a Future for the Long Haul

This year marks another significant milestone: Romero and her husband officially purchased the property that houses the creamery, cementing their long-term vision for the business.

“Now I own both the creamery and the property, which means that Bonney’s—in my eyes—will be around for many, many years to come,” Romero said. “I foresee just building up the business even more.”

Captain Bonney’s offers over 50 flavors of premium ice cream and plans to introduce a series of seasonal events and promotions, including a themed rodeo week, “Dog Days of Summer,” and monthly creative sundaes developed by staff.

“This year, we’re trying out a lot of new sundaes, drinks, and food,” Romero said. “There’s always room for improvement, but we’re working toward that.”

A Team That Feels Like Family

Romero credits much of the creamery’s success to her dedicated team.

“My crew has been amazing. They’re just really, really solid, awesome kids,” she said. “My two most seasoned employees have been here for seven years, and many others have stayed for four. Everyone who started last year came back this year. Our little family is great.”

As Captain Bonney’s Creamery approaches its 15th season, Romero remains optimistic and grateful—for the growth, for her team, and for the community that continues to support their shared dream.

“It’s more than just ice cream,” she said. “It’s history, hard work, and heart.”
