RATCHABURI, Thailand — A man in central Thailand was left stunned after discovering a snake frozen inside an ice cream bar purchased from a street vendor — a disturbing find that quickly captured widespread attention online and raised serious questions about food safety.
Rayban Naklengboon, a resident of Pak Tho in the Mueang Ratchaburi district, shared the shocking discovery on his Facebook page, posting photos of the frozen black bean-flavored treat with the snake clearly visible inside. The images went viral, sparking thousands of reactions, comments, and shares.
“Such big eyes! Is it dead yet?” Rayban wrote in Thai alongside the photos. “Black bean, street vendor, real picture because I bought it myself.”
The ice cream, a popular local variety, contained what appeared to be a small black-and-yellow snake — possibly a golden tree snake (Chrysopelea ornata), a mildly venomous species common in the region. Experts believe the snake was likely a juvenile, measuring between 20 and 40 centimeters in length.
Online reactions ranged from horror to humor. One user joked, “The first bite gets you hooked, the next puts you in a hospital bed,” while another quipped, “It should be a new flavour: ice cream with a snack flavor.” Some users sarcastically referred to it as a “protein boost.”
However, others expressed concern about the incident, urging authorities to investigate the source of the ice cream. Several comments questioned how an entire snake could make it into the product unnoticed and warned of potential contamination risks from the production facility.
At the time of reporting, the ice cream manufacturer had not been identified, and no official response had been issued. The incident has added to a list of global food contamination cases. In 2017, a pregnant woman in India found a fried lizard in her McDonald’s fries, while a woman in California nearly ate a live frog in her salad. In the UK, a father once discovered a dead mouse in a loaf of bread intended for his children.
As this latest case continues to circulate online, calls for stricter food safety regulations and better oversight of street food vendors in Thailand are gaining momentum.
