WINCHESTER, Va. — Shenandoah University is marking its 150th anniversary with a sweet tribute, unveiling a new commemorative ice cream flavor in partnership with Red Fox Creamery, a beloved local establishment on the Loudoun Street Mall.
The celebratory flavor, named Buzzy’s Birthday Blast, was revealed Wednesday evening during a small gathering outside the creamery. The custom creation features a rich vanilla ice cream base, swirled with chunks of homemade cake and topped with red and blue star-shaped sprinkles—an homage to the university’s colors and mascot.
The flavor was developed through a collaboration between Red Fox Creamery owner Kathy Puffinburger and a committee of SU students tasked with curating a fitting tribute for the university’s sesquicentennial.
“Here, we’re all about local, all about our community,” said Scott Spriggs, Shenandoah’s chief creative officer. “It’s our 150th anniversary, from 1875 to today. It’s a year-long birthday celebration.”
The idea for a birthday cake-inspired flavor came from SU senior Taylor Bullis, a member of the student committee.
“I was actually the one that spoke up and said, ‘Well, it’s our 150th anniversary. That’s kind of like a birthday.’ And I love birthday cake ice cream,” Bullis said.
The suggestion quickly gained traction with the rest of the group. After sampling Puffinburger’s handcrafted version, the committee unanimously agreed it was the perfect choice.
“Her vanilla ice cream is phenomenal,” said SU sophomore Kaitlyn Wahl. “It really is probably one of the best vanillas that I’ve had. And because everything’s homemade, it just gives that little taste of home.”
Puffinburger confirmed that Buzzy’s Birthday Blast will remain on the menu for the foreseeable future, offering a flavorful way for community members and SU supporters to partake in the ongoing anniversary festivities.
Shenandoah University’s 150th celebration officially began this past winter and will continue through the spring of next year.
